Genos or Pats? The Philly Cheesteak Challenge

We recently played at a cool room in Philly called the Raven Lounge and afterwords, Rob and I decided to take the cheese-steak challenge. As most of you know late night on East Passyunk Avenue is a haven for both locals and tourist who want the legendary cheese-steak that Philly is known for. I texted a bunch of Philly friends after the show and other than, “well if you really want the best,” type of answer that I was expecting, it was a mixed bag. Most said Geno’s, but my friend Frank had the best answer, “one from both.”

I don’t know if we were planning at first to take this challenge, but it happened. And the results are in. We go to Geno’s first and at 8 bucks a pop we both ordered “Whiz without,” vernacular for a cheese-steak with Cheese Whiz instead of provolone and no onions. It came out immediately, and upon first bite, it was a little cold. Once we got into the van, we agreed it seemed to get better with every bite.

Not totally satisfied, we agreed to split one from Pat’s to see what’s what. Now you know these guys get mad when you don’t know what to order (we got prior instructions) but they can be really nice too.

So I stroll up ready to order my whiz without and the guy at the counter is kicking a young asian woman for ordering wrong and them having to make a sandwich with stuff she didn’t want. I ignored it, uttered my order, and the dude was like how bout a steak with and with onions and mushrooms…for free. I tried to tip them but they wouldn’t have it. Couldn’t pass that up, even knowing I hate mushrooms and both Rob and I feel that onions don’t belong in cheese-steak.

So Rob is looking at me funny as I’m throwing out as many ‘shrooms as I can and I return to the van with my story. He agreed it was the best move. And it was piping hot. Despite the extra ingredients we both gave the nod to Pat’s for overall taste. Good job Pat’s. And that’s that.

It’s been a long yet fruitful few days at camp laces. Working a lot. Not sleeping much. We aren’t getting together tomorrow as we have some admin duties, so I have a couple of hours to myself. Figured I’d reflect. I’m totally shanking on my new years resolutions. I have two. 1) Put more time into playing sweet video games on my ps3 and 2) Be more selfish. I haven’t even opened modern warfare 2 and I have been spending what little free time I have on the phone giving buddies advice. I suck. I should be out and about but all I can think about is the Yankees and whether or not I should get another Volkswagen. I love my doorman. I’m hungry, I have to remember to eat. Maybe I can find the 2009 World Series video on iTunes. I have been watching TV the last two months though. I never do that other than sports. I’m into Showtime. Dexter and Californication especially, on demand of course. Maybe I’ll watch a movie. No, no, no. I’m going to meet up with friends. Well, maybe not. Maybe Billy is playing poker. All I know is that if I look at a Pro Tools session again today I’m gonna barf. I’m starting to like Facebook. I’m definitely going to blog more. I thought it was dorky, but I don’t know how to tweet yet so I guess it evens out. I’m hungry. Rob got me a towel with a penis on it. Two actually. Dicks, not towels. For Hanukkah. Maybe I’ll go out after all. I so live in the big city. Not too late to get a steak at Wollensky’s grill. Uhh, the phone is ringing again. Night off people. Night off. I sound sour. I’m not. I love you all. I’m hungry

My middle name is Evan. Rob told me to think of something cool to name my blog, but I couldn’t so I thought I’d let the laces community in on the fact that I have a weird middle name. I have a good first name. But I don’t like Evan. I’m going to come to peace with that with this blog. Heading to Euphoria rehearsal studios tomorrow to do final preproduction on our new album so have to get my practice and rest in. Will report the comings and goings of the record in the days to come.
